Description

Forest Edge is a traditional 19th century granite cottage in a quiet location on the edge of the small town of Dalbeattie, backing onto unspoilt woodland, with views to the surrounding hills. The cottage itself has been tastefully extended and refurbished to provide a comfortable home-away-from-home for up to four people.

Accommodation

The cottage has full double-glazing and gas central heating in all rooms, plus an open fire in the lounge, making it warm and cozy at any time of year. The property is tastefully furnished and decorated throughout, with many personal touches giving it a truly homely feeling.

Accommodation includes one double and one twin bedroom on the first floor (each with duvets), while on the ground floor there is a large, comfortably furnished lounge with open fire, TV, VCD, and DVD player; a well-equipped modern dining-kitchen, with electric cooker, washer, microwave and fridge and a good supply of cooking utensils etc.; and a bathroom with electric shower. All bed linen and towels are provided. On request, we can also offer a highchair and travel cot for those with young children, at no extra cost - please supply guests' own child's bedding.

To the rear of the property, a good-sized garden, with patio seating area and pond, leads up to the woods at the rear, and offers views to the surrounding hills. Just over the garden wall lie a network of paths and cycle ways (part of the 7Stanes network) leading down to the beautiful Colvend Coast. If guests are lucky, they may even see red squirrels and deer feeding in the garden. Please note the garden is partially terraced and may not be suitable for those with mobility problems, and small children should be supervised at all times.

Dog owners are welcome to bring up to 2 canine companions with them, at a small extra charge - we just ask guests also bring their own bed, and do not allow them on sofas and soft furnishings. Unfortunately the garden is not fully enclosed, but there are ample dog-walking opportunities right on the doorstep.

There is unrestricted on-street car parking directly outside the cottage.

Golfing Breaks

When guests book to stay with us at 'Forest Edge', we can arrange specially discounted rates for guests to play at Dalbeattie Golf Course (just 1/2 mile from the cottage). We can offer one full day's golfing for just £10 (normally £18), or a 7 day pass for just £50. During the Summer months, access may be limited at weekends due to competitions - do check when booking to avoid disappointment.

The course is a delightful 9 hole parkland course, with great views across the Urr Valley to the Galloway and Lakeland hills beyond. Par for the course is 68 for gents or 70 for ladies. Motorised buggies are available to hire for £18 per day.

Please discuss guests needs with us when booking to ensure the best possible discounts.

Around and About
Dalbeattie is less than half an hour’s drive from Dumfries, the regional capital, on the Galloway Tourist Route to Ayr. Stranraer, with the ferry to Ireland, is within easy reach by car or bus.

Dalbeattie town, reknowned for its granite which has been used for many famous buildings throughout the UK and beyond, offers a good range of shops, pubs and eateries, and is only ten minutes walk away from the cottage. Castle Douglas (D&G’s Food Town), Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright (Artist’s Town) are all within half an hour’s drive, while Newton Stewart, Wigtown (national Book Town) and Moffat are also within easy reach by car.

Closer to home, the East Stewarty Coast (National Scenic Area) offers a variety of clifftop walks and lovely coastal villages, with Kippford and Rockliffe only ten minutes away - or about a 4 mile walk through the woods at the rear of the property, and Sandyhills, with its large sandy beach, just a short drive further along the coast.
The area is ideal for walking, with miles of forest trails just over the garden wall (forming part of the famous 7Stanes mountain-biking network) and a number of spectacular coastal paths a short drive down the road, and even in mid-season guests can often find their own secret beach .The more challenging terrain of the Galloway Hills (including the Southern Upland Way) is also within easy reach. The nearby Galloway Forest Park and surrounding hills offer further opportunities to enjoy the glorious scenery and wildlife of the area, including the Galloway Red Kite Trail, and has recently been designated a 'Dark Sky Park', ideal for late night star-gazing. There are numerous historic sites in the area, including Caerlaverock and Threave castles, and Sweetheart Abbey, and some lovely gardens open to the public. Attractions for children include Mabie Farm Park and Twynholm's Cocoa Bean chocolate factory.
