Location: Set in a tiny farming community in the hills amid olive groves and vineyards between Arezzo and Siena, this delightfully restored, traditionally furnished, comfortable and spacious ground floor apartment in a portion of a traditional southern Tuscan farmhouse is friendly, tranquil and secure. It has lovely views of farmland, forest, mountains and villages, and lies less than 4km from the Florence-Rome motorway (autostrada) and the local historic walled town of Monte San Savino. It is less than 25 minutes by road or rail to Arezzo, which has a mainline station and non-stop routes to Milan, Rome and Naples. This is an ideal location for a peaceful holiday, for exploring, walking and driving, or for someone wanting a longer-term base for work, study, writing, sabbatical, or whatever. Nature-lovers will be stunned by the unspoilt country, birds, butterflies and local wildlife. From the house you can see the magnificent tower of Castello Gargonza, where Dante stayed and wrote. Excellently placed for visiting/commuting to Florence (1hr+) Siena (45minutes) Arezzo (less than 30 minutes) and Rome (2 hrs), the apartment is also within a short drive of Lago Trasimeno, Cortona, Pienza, San Gimignano and so much besides.
A car is ideal if not essential, as the apartment is situated up a steep 'white road' not really suitable for bike or scooter, and 4km into town is a long walk! Secure parking is not a problem.
Winter as well as summer-friendly, the apartment has central heating and a log burning fireplace. It comprises a big studio bedroom with comfortable double bed, TV and lots of books, a small dressing-room/bedroom/sitting room with ample wardrobe/cupboard space and a French window leading to a pretty terrace with table and chairs, en suite bathroom with tub and bidet. The large, light, airy and spacious kitchen/dining room is well equipped with fold-down dining table for 6/8, cooker (hob, oven), fridge-freezer, open log burning fireplace, and a large sofa and TV point. The back door leads to a lovely private orchard garden with olives, vines, apricots, plums and figs. While the apartment would ideally suit a couple or a single person, there is a double sofa bed, and the apartment could sleep four. There are laundry facilities (shared with the owner), weekly cleaning/ironing if required. This is an ideal spot for work as well as relaxation with excellent broadband, mobile phone reception, and ample outdoor parking in a very secure rural community of small farms. All linen, towels, etc provided. Smokers not objected to!
Monte San Savino, once a Medici stronghold in the heart of the Val di Chiana, and boasting a handsome walled medieval centre with some notable buildings and an amphitheatre, Monte San Savino is noted for its local cuisine, including the famous porchetta wild boar, , and locally produced wine, oil, vegetables and fruit. This active, busy and very friendly little town is well served for almost everything, including supermarkets, a railway station, two post offices, banks and several excellent restaurants. There is a weekly street market on Wednesdays, and like much of the local area, the town has a thriving antiques trade. Its helpful English-speaking staff at the Tourist Information office can arrange guided tours of the 14th Century catacombs and much besides. Monte San Savino lies less than half an hour from the small city of Arezzo, famed as the Italian centre of the gold trade, and which holds an antiques fair on the first Sunday of every month. There is a wonderful and famous cathedral, museum exhibitions, including the permanent display of the works of Piero della Francesca, a summer jazz festival, excellent independent shops, ceramics and some marvellous restaurants.
The whole area is full of music, festivals, medieval displays and local fairs dedicated to local produce. This region is famed for its wine and oil, and there are many local cantine which offer wine tasting. In Autumn, many restaurants specialise in local wild boar and truffle dishes.
For those interested in activities, there are local cookery and painting courses available.
