Jerez is a quintessential, traditional Spanish town, steeped in history and almost undiscovered by the hoards that visit its better known neighbors such as Sevilla and Cádiz.
World famous for its wine industry, this ancient walled city has prospered thanks to the sherry that has been produces here for centuries. The towns many sherry bodegas still offer wine tastings, tours and entertainment.
Jerez provides some stunning architecture with its wide array of historical churches and magnificent palaces, many of which have been beautifully restored.
Back to the sherry... Jerez de la Frontera is the home of sherry and one of the three towns in Andalucia which make up the 'Sherry Triangle'. After reading Heston Blumenthal's article "The Hungry Traveller's Guide to Jerez" a couple of years ago, Jerez had been on my hit list of places to visit and it didn't disappoint. Most tourists seem only to visit Jerez for a day, or two at the most, but we were there for a little over a week (which seemed to amuse the man in the tourist office). Before we arrived we had great plans of a trip to Cadiz on the train and hiring a car to visit Cordoba and some of the typical Andalucian 'white villages' but when it came to it we ended up spending the whole week in Jerez...From the Ginger-Gourmet Blog. 2009/04
Jerez is also known as the cradle of flamenco because many of the most famous flamenco performers were born here. The areas of Santiago and San Miguel, each within a few minutes walk of the apartment, are the origin of some of the greatest figures in the world of flamenco, and where the purest flamenco can be found. Jerez offers more than a dozen Peñas Flamencas (flamenco clubs) for live music, and the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco is on the same street as the apartment.
The Jerez festive calendar starts the flamenco festival:
one of the most important in the world, with two weeks of phenomenal music and dance from internationally renowned performers.
Jerez is a hidden treasure full of charm, very much off the beaten track and quintessential spanish. It is also a gateway to places like Sevilla, Cadiz, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and the Costa de la Luz. A very relaxed atmosphere with a "feel good" factor throughout. A place to relax, recharge and just wonder around and soak it all in!
